Coaching

The two most popular weekly sessions at GUT are our coaching sessions. These two hour sessions cater for all abilities, from beginner through to team player, and are run by professional, qualified Head Coaches, with Assistant Coaches helping out.

Wednesday Afternoon 1pm - 4pm

This session is held at Kelvingrove tennis courts. This session sees us get 5 courts for 3 hours. There will be two different groups attending at different times:

Beginners / Improvers - 1pm - 2.30pm.

Strong Intermediate / Advanced - 2.30pm - 4pm

Naturally, there may be some difficulty in finding the correct groups for people at the start: after a few weeks, we should have sorted out which players belong in which group!

Sessions begin with everyone warming up together: a run, some stretches and some racket/ball skills. Players are then separated by ability (beginner/intermediate/advanced), and a number of drills are run by the coaches, usually working on a certain skills - a different shot each week. The session ends with some group competitive games, sometimes bringing all ability groups together for a huge games of doubles champions!

Sunday Evening 7pm - 9pm

This is our most popular session of the week. Held on indoor courts at the David Lloyd Centre in Anniesland, it offers a chance to get out of the wintry Glasgow weather, and play some tennis in warm, controlled conditions.

These sessions begin with an extended warm-up over 4 courts, featuring a greater  emphasis on footwork and fitness drills. Players are again split by ability, with advanced and team players usually moved on to the other set of 4 courts. Sunday sessions tend to touch on all different shots, with an emphasis on playing points. The sessions are ended with some singles / doubles matchplay.

David Lloyd Anniesland is not really within walking distance, so we organise a GUSA minibus service to pick players up from the Boyd Orr car park at around 6.30pm. The cost of this transport is included in the membership. On especially busy evenings, or days when we have been unlucky enough not to be allocated a bus, we have to make do with taxis.

David Lloyd Sundays are an excellent way to get lots of tennis (we normally get 6+ courts), and are an enjoyable way to end your weekend, before the early Monday morning grind!
