Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question about GUT? It may be in the list below...If not, you can direct enquiries to captain-menstennis@gusa.gla.ac, and we'll be happy to respond with an answer. You can also ask any committee members at one of our sessions.

01

Can I join GUT even though I am a beginner?

At GUT, we pride ourselves on being one of the least-elitist clubs on campus. Players of all abilities are welcome, from complete beginners to elite team players. We even structure our coaching sessions into ability groups (beginner/intermediate/advanced/team) so that everyone feels comfortable!

02

Do I have to own a racket?

No. GUT provides equipment hire included within the membership price, and as such we have plenty of spare racket available for use. Even if you're just coming along to try tennis, we can lend you a racket for free! We do recommend purchasing a racket if you plan to join GUT for several years - it is a great investment. Why not check out our equipment store:

03

How much is it to join?

Membership costs £40 for the year, and this includes absolutely everything: court use, coaching, socials. Check out our membership page for the full list of perks.

Remember that unless you're a first year living in Halls, you must also join the gym, at a cost of £125. You can join the gym by visiting the Stevenson Building reception

04

I'm only here for one semester, is there any discount?

Unfortunately, GUT cannot offer any reduced membership fees for students who are only in Glasgow for one semester. However, £40 is still exceptional value for money, even if you are only paying for half the year. At any other club in the West End of Glasgow, you could easily spend £40 per month on membership and coaching - so it's still great value!

05

Do you offer an social activities?

If you're more interested in the social, rather than the sport, side of things, you'll be pleased to know that GUT has a reputation for having the largest social scene in Scottish university tennis! We host socials nearly every two weeks, usually with various themes, and sometimes with other clubs or universities. Some of our favourites are our SubCrawl, Around-The-World Flat Crawl, Pub Golf, Cheese and Wine etc.

06

How do I go about playing for the Teams?

On the last Sunday in September, we will host Team Trials at the indoor David Lloyd Centre in Anniesland. Everyone is allowed to come along and try out for the teams, under the watchful eye of the Team Captains Gillian and Robbie, and our Wednesday and Sunday coach. The standard for playing for the team is pretty high, and Team Trials are not a coaching session, therefore we encourage only players of an advanced ability to come along. There is always opportunity to be spotted as having the potential for the teams later in the year - the Team Trials are by no means the only opportunity!
